When visiting the US one has no idea how different it is from when moving here for real. American culture is so disseminated worldwide through movies and music that there's always that feeling that we know enough but that's not even close to how one gets bombarded with new information when moving here.
For me, coming from a tropical country, where people are very open, talkative and ready to make new friendships, coming to the US, especially Chicago wasn’t easy. When speaking, we express a lot of feelings, constantly moving our hands and arms and here where private space is a golden rule can be easy to offend someone or make them feel uncomfortable.
After a while naturally we get used to the local manners and even start questioning your own cultural characteristics. At first when we think our manner is a better way to deal with relationships and after a period of time, you think our own ways are strange. There’s always that feeling of trying to figure out which way is right or wrong, better or worst but there are no sides to mannerisms, we have to understand that they are just different.
